My little sister went to her prom this past weekend! Prom! Haven't had a chance to talk to her about it yet, but I hope she had a good time. I was actually away in a land far, far away. Actually it was only Dallas. But my activities were far removed from the festivities of prom.
Prom is a watershed moment in high school that's more important than graduation on some levels. And if a person decides not to go, then it was meant to be a statement, both personal and socially. I wasn't much on for making social commentaries back then. For me it was a moment not to be missed even if it was trumped up too much. In hindsight it was only a dance. But at the moment it was the biggest dance ever. It was an event! Repeated all across the continental United States. From the inner cities to the farm towns of the Midwest.
Going to prom didn't signify any important accomplishment, but then again how much can you accomplish in high school. Let's face it, there aren't many milestones to be had when you are in high school. And so prom took on greater importance for the lack of other prominent experiences. For many it was the Superbowl of our lives. A time to celebrate together with all your friends and that special someone.
Prom was like so 12 years ago for me. But I had a blast on my prom night. Though more and more of the specific details are gradually falling in the realm of mythology. That's where it belongs. In our memories of treasured moments, whether it has some greater social meaning or not. It had meaning at the time. And that's all you can ask for in anything we do at any moment, meaning.
Time flies as we busy ourselves with daily activities. Poignant moments such as prom, graduation, births, & marriages mark our travels.
